Why your gut health isn’t improving (even though you’ve tried everything)
If you’ve been wondering why your gut health isn’t improving even though you’ve tried everything, you’re not alone.
Most people who reach out to work with me have already tried to fix their gut on their own.
They’ve taken probiotics (usually more than once).
They’ve made diet changes.
They’ve tried cutting things out.
And many of them have worked with a GI doctor.
They’ve been told to add fiber like Metamucil. Or take Miralax if they’re constipated to help things move. Or they’ve been given something to slow things down if they’re dealing with ongoing diarrhea.
And sometimes those things help… temporarily.
But they don’t really answer the bigger question of:
Why is this happening in the first place?
Then there’s the testing side of things.
A lot of people have gone through a full workup.
Colonoscopies.
Endoscopies.
Lab testing.
And what they’re often left with is a diagnosis like:
IBS.
GERD.
Or something structural — like a hernia, hemorrhoids, a long or tortuous colon, or diverticula.
And while those findings are important to know about, they don’t always explain things like:
• daily bloating
• gas after meals
• food sensitivities
• unpredictable bowel patterns
And this is where it gets frustrating.
Because the solution to those diagnoses is usually symptom management.
✔ Take this to help you go.
✔ Take this to slow things down.
✔ Take this to suppress stomach acid.
But there’s often no deeper conversation about:
? Why your gut is functioning the way it is in the first place.
? No real plan to understand the root cause.
? No strategy to actually normalize digestion.
Then there’s another group of people who have gone a step further.
They’ve done specialty stool or microbiome testing — either on their own or through a functional medicine provider.
And instead of a diagnosis, they’re given a protocol.
A list of supplements.
A list of things to take.
A plan to follow.
And again… sometimes that helps.
But a lot of times, it doesn’t fully resolve things because the protocol is often:
- too generic
- not adjusted over time
- not truly personalized to the whole picture
And this is often where people get stuck — wondering why their gut health isn’t improving despite everything they’ve tried.
If they’re not getting answers from testing or providers, they start trying to figure it out themselves.
And that usually leads them straight to the internet.
You’ve probably been shown every supplement under the sun:
✔ Colostrum
✔ Probiotics.
✔ Greens powders
✔ Fiber
✔ Collagen
✔ “Gut healing” protocols
And maybe you’ve tried a handful of those too.
And you’re still stuck.
So why isn’t your gut health improving, even after all of this?
Let’s talk about why.
Because this is the turning point.
All of those things? They’re tools.
And tools only work if you’re using the right one for the right problem.
You wouldn’t use a wrench to hammer a nail.
Same idea here.
There are a lot of helpful tools when it comes to gut health…
But how are you supposed to know which one to use if you don’t actually know what’s going on inside your body?
Gut healing is not plug-and-play.
What works for one person doesn’t automatically work for another.
Even if two people had the exact same symptoms…their root causes could be completely different.
And even if two people had identical test results…their plan still wouldn’t be identical.
Because your gut is influenced by so many things:
✔ Your diet.
✔ Your stress.
✔ Your nervous system.
✔ Your health history.
✔ Your environment.
✔ Your medication use.
✔ Your age.
✔ Your lifestyle.
All of it matters.
And this is where testing gets misunderstood.
Some of you have done testing.
Maybe you even worked with a functional medicine provider.
Maybe you ordered a direct-to-consumer stool test on your own.
And you got… a report. With a list of findings. And a list of recommendations.
And maybe you tried to follow it.
But nothing really changed.
Here’s why:
A test doesn’t fix your gut. A plan does. And not just any plan.
A personalized, evolving plan.
A lot of direct-to-consumer tests give you computer-generated protocols.
They’re generic. They don’t take into account you.
And even when you work with a provider, sometimes what happens is:
You get the testing. You get a plan. And then… that’s it.
No real follow-up. No adjustments. No support when things aren’t working the way you expected.
And gut healing doesn’t work like that.
Gut healing is nuanced.
It requires ongoing adjustments. It requires paying attention to how your body is responding.
It requires tweaking things along the way.
This is why I often say:
I’m in the trenches with my clients.
Because this isn’t something you figure out in a 20-minute appointment.
And it’s definitely not something a PDF report can do for you.
And this is exactly why I created It Starts in the Gut®.
Not because people weren’t trying.
And not because there aren’t good tools out there.
But because after doing this work for over 14 years, I’ve seen something very clearly:
Gut healing doesn’t happen from a one-time appointment.
And it doesn’t happen from being handed a plan and told to go follow it.
Because what actually happens in real life is:
→ You try something.
→ Your body responds (or doesn’t).
→ Something needs to be adjusted.
→ And then adjusted again.
This work is nuanced.
And you need someone helping you interpret what’s happening in your body along the way. Not just at the beginning.
That’s how I built It Starts in the Gut®. Not as a one-time plan…But as a place where we:
✔ test
✔ interpret
✔ implement
✔ adjust
✔ and continue refining based on how your body responds.
Because that’s what actually leads to change.
If you want to learn more about how I approach this work, you can head to the It Starts in the Gut® page.
This is exactly the type of situation we work through inside It Starts in the Gut® — when your gut health isn’t improving and you’re not sure what you’re missing.
And I’ll leave you with this:
Most people don’t need more information. They need support while they’re doing the work.
